I haven't run for several years, and every morning when I plan on running I make an excuse not to run, and instead just watch TV or go back to sleep. What can I do to get motivated and start running again?

I did not want to run then I got hooked by tracking my runs with my Ipod. There is nothing like seeing you data and how much you progress. For me, it got me going as I had to see all these charts getting bigger and more populated. (By the way, Nike+ had a feature article in a magazine. They were saying that if someone logs 5 runs, then they are hooked, they keep going. All the drop-off are below 5 runs). Good luck. |

To get started and motivated, start small and run so you enjoy it. You can start with five minutes at a time. Plan the time for your run and set aside your running shoes, socks, and workout clothes before hand. Then, go for the run at your planned time. Once you can make the habit, starting 5-10 minutes at a time a few times a week, it will be easier to continue to do longer distances over a few weeks. Enjoy the run, run at a speed you can keep up for the length you decide, and walk if you feel like it. |
